Sometimes referred to as the “Central Park” of Budapest , Margitsziget, or Margaret Island , in Hungary 's capital city is a serene yet lively spot for boating, swimming and recreation. Situated on the Danube River , the 200-acre park is connected to both Buda and Pest (formerly two separate cities) by the Árpád and Margaret bridges, on which stand sculptures designed by French architect Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. In the 13th century, King Bela IV named Margaret Island after his daughter, and it was home to a Franciscan monastery and nunnery, the ruins of which can be seen on the island's east bank. The park first opened to the public in 1869. Bikers, joggers and strollers are common along the Artists' Promenade, a winding trail lined with busts of Hungarian artists, writers and musicians. At the northern end of the grounds is a replica of the water-powered Marosvásárhely Musical Fountain, which plays songs and chimes. Near the fountain lies a Japanese rock garden with dwarf trees and a pool of water lilies.
