GREAT PLACES
Old & New
By Meredith Newlin
Berlin
is a historically rich, rejuvenated metropolis that embraces a creative spirit.
There’s a saying that one is not born a Berliner, but becomes a Berliner.
One of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, Berlin is the product of its complicated
history and its forward-looking residents. To get to know the city’s past,
visit the war memorial Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche, then inspect the original
remains of the Berlin Wall at the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer-Dokumentationszentrum.
Climb the stairs inside the glass dome of the Reichstag for a panoramic view of the
city, then relax in the Tiergarten, a popular public park. For shopping, head to
Kaufhaus des Westens, Europe’s largest department store, in the western part
of the city. Afterward, visit Breitscheidplatz, a gathering spot for locals who wet
their feet in the Wasserklops fountain while enjoying performances by street artists.
On the city’s eastern side, browse along the Kurfürstendamm, a street
full of bookshops, galleries and elegant boutiques. For Berlin’s cultural showcase,
go to Unter den Linden, where you can find the State Opera house, Humboldt University,
the St. Hedwig Cathedral, the Berlin City Library and the Museumsinsel, a renowned
fine-arts museum. The perfect base for enjoying Berlin is in the heart of the city
at the Radisson
SAS Hotel, Berlin, which recently celebrated its grand opening and
features the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium, the 250,000-gallon AquaDom,
in its lobby. The AquaDom encases the elevator and is home to about 2,500 tropical
fish.
