There was something familiar about the house on the hill, its white roof gleaming above the tangle of lush underbrush. Next to it, a single palm tree slashed across the blue sky like a brush stroke on paper. The house was pink, and like all the buildings in Bermuda, it had a limestone roof designed to collect rain for drinking water.

Only later did I realize that the scene reminded me of some of the watercolors of American painter Winslow Homer. Homer came to Bermuda for the first time in 1899 aboard the steamship Trinidad, the first vessel to bring vacationers to the island. He returned again in 1901. He eventually painted more than 20 watercolors there.

Now, as I look at reproductions in an art book months after my visit, I easily imagine my own experiences have become part of his paintings. With Shore at Bermuda, I am standing along the road just outside the scene in the picture, looking down the sloping lawn toward the two white houses and the broad expanse of turquoise sea. The palmettos and cedars are casting long shadows. My eyes are drawn toward an open door, and I almost feel the coolness of the darkened room. In no hurry, I wait for the bus in the sleepy, late afternoon, listening to the pleasing sound of the distant surf.
